I have just got back from visiting friends in Cape Town. It's drought there at the moment, as well as being summertime, so not a great deal is flowering in terms of orchids. I think the Disa uniflora will start to flower later this month, as I saw none. Fabulous scenery in the nature reserves, but I only spotted two orchids.....

1) Disa cornuta, at Silvermine:

2) Unknown Disa (?) beside a shady stream in the Kogelberg mountains:

Rob, no one can ever accuse you of going for the big brash flowers that appeal so much to me. Your choices are much more subtle, but no less appealing.

Seeing two is better than nothing, Rob.

I visited Cape Town again recently and despite a very serious drought across the whole Western Cape, saw a few orchids:

I think this is Disa rosea:

And I think this is a (variable) Disa bracteata:

Finally, this is Disa (or Monadenia) ophrydea, which grows on burned ground:

So nice! D. uniflora has a habit of over shadowing the genus but these are great. I hope I can see more orchids in their natural habitat one day.
